Dr. Huw R. Lewis, FRCO
Now in the second decade of his return to the position, it is with great joy that we continue to have Dr. Huw Lewis as Director of Music, Organist and Master of the Choir at St. John’s Episcopal Church of Detroit. After serving as the interim at St. John’s from September through December of 2004, Fr. Steven J. Kelly, SSC, Rector of St. John’s, offered the position on a permanent basis. This is Dr. Lewis’ second tenure at St. John’s, having served in the same capacity from 1974 to 1990.
Dr. Lewis commutes from the western side of the state, where he continues to teach and is currently Chair of the Music Department at Hope College. Upon Dr. Lewis’ acceptance of the offer to return, the Rector commented, "We are grateful that he feels that the position here is worth the mileage he puts on his car each week!"

Having caused at the time a “buzz” in the local music community, it is considered a real coup for St. John’s to have had Huw return to his church home in Detroit.*
