Join us after the 10:00 a.m. service to discuss Inferno written by Dante Alighieri around 1314. St. John's will be offering this weekly class beginning Sunday, September 29.
[We will meet briefly Sunday, August 25 to distribute texts and talk a little about what to expect.]
Everyone joining the course will be provided the texts (donated by a generous benefactor).
The texts provided are The Inferno translated by Robert & Jean Hollander, 2002 AND The Divine Comedy: Volume 1 The Inferno translated by Mark Musa, rev. 2002.
Because the Hollander translation is outstanding in the historical and political notes it provides in addition to the side-by-side Latinate Italian and the English translation, it complements the Musa translation with its thorough and well-organized theology- and philosophy-centered notes. Together, these works give the reader a deeper understanding than working with only one of them.
The instructor for the course is Elizabeth Savage. Before joining St. John's as Office Manager, Elizabeth was a high school English teacher who taught Inferno beginning in the fall of 2013. Elizabeth was fortunate to have read La Divina Commedia under the instruction of Dr. Pamela Royston Macfie at Sewanee in June 2015.
