Huw Lewis was born into a musical family in Wales, and received formal training with John Birch and Ralph Downes at the Royal College of Music in London and at Cambridge University. In 1972, he came to the United States to study organ at the University of Michigan, earning Master’s and Doctoral degrees in organ performance. His teachers there were Robert Clark, Robert Glasgow, and Marilyn Mason.
Dr. Lewis is currently the College Organist at Hope College, and he has been the Director of Music at St. John’s Church on and off since 1974. Dr. Lewis performs nationally and internationally, and he has featured for many professional organizations including the American Guild of Organists and the Royal College of Organists. Dr. Lewis has been broadcast in America and in Great Britain where he has made recordings for the BBC. He has also served on many competition juries, most recently for the 2003 Dallas International Organ Competition.
In his spare time, Huw loves cooking Indian food with his friends, and he has recently been enjoying Pink Martini, an old-fashioned pop and jazz band from Portland, Oregon.
